GDF WEBINAR | DIRECT from cow to consumer. More than a niche

DD. june 16th, 2021 - With increasing globalizations we have seen over the last decades the agricultural industry has been able to create a very efficient supply chain from famer to consumer. But what is the impact of this system on the appreciation of the craftsmanship of the individual farmers. Is there enough room for authenticity and quality in this homogeneous market?

In 2018 Lely introduced the Lely Orbiter: a mini - dairy processor that can separate milk at cow level, process it and bottle on the farm. It creates a different approach to create types of milk based on milk from individual cows, traceable milk and fresh milk, but it also enables the farmer to creates its own position in the supply chain.
In this GDF webinar Sergio Ooijens explains the value they hope to bring to dairy farmers in this process and elaborate on the hurdles encountered along the way.

Presented by Sergio Ooijens, Lely.

Please note that this webinar is not available on demand.

GDF WEBINAR | MAXIMISE YOUR HOME-GROWN FORAGE

Ensilage: best practices

dd. MAY 26th, 2021

Presented by Tim Brewer, Silostop.

Home grown forage is the most cost effective feedstuff you will feed to your herd. Maximising yields and maintaining herd health whilst minimising expensive bought in feed is a must for every successful dairy farm. Whether your crop is grass, whole crop, maize, or any other forage a lot of time, effort and money goes into its production. It can sit in the bunker for many months and if not looked after you can lose a lot of available dry matter from the top 1m and end up with a lot of waste on the surface and shoulders. This then must be disposed of which again takes time and effort.

Our webinar looks to explore the options to seal the bunker effectively, the best practices of ensilage. So locking out oxygen which then enables the crop to ferment quicker and so hold on to the valuable dry matter. An effectively sealed crop will also have no waste so 100% of it is available to feed out.

GDF WEBINAR | THE CRUCIAL PHASE IN DAIRY COWS’ LIFE: BEING A CALF

dd. APRIL 21st, 2021

Presented by Pascal van Keulen and Arjan Meijerink, Denkavit.

--

BEING A CALF...crucial elements to ensure a happy and healthy and growing calf. It's #farmers' mind! The no. of participants and questions were impressive! What engagement. Proud to have Denkavit as our partner.

Growth and health performance in the early stages of life of a calf have a great relationship with the lifetime yield of a dairy cow. During this webinar, we combine the latest research with practice to answer the question: how do I get the best out of my calf? We focus on the anatomy of the young ruminant: its (four) stomach complex, the esophageal groove and the big impact of different feeding systems and methods. Furthermore, one of the biggest and hugely underestimated problems in calf rearing globally are discussed on how to recognize, treat, and prevent it.

GDF SOLUTION CENTER | GLOBAL EXPERTISE - LOCAL PRACTICE

- Farmers Only -

dd. MARCH 11th, 2021

A topic brought by by Renate Wiendels and Anneke van Rooijen of VIV Worldwide

Brainstorm session on theme VIV Europe 2022

Theme VIV Europe 2022 : Global Expertise- Local Practice

Global food systems make us vulnerable in time of worldwide crisis. In addition the call of consumers for sustainable food production becomes louder.

The role of Local food production is essential next to the Global supply chains. The Global and Local systems need to be brought into a suitable balance. When one system fails, the other can provide stability. To create this balance the local consumption needs to increase, which means that shorter supply chains are also required.

For development it is vital to collect the correct knowledge and find the right partners. VIV Europe 2022 provides the required Global expertise to boast the Local practice in a sustainable way.

GDF SOLUTION CENTER | ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AT THE FARM

- Farmers Only -

dd. FEBRUARY 24th, 2021

A topic brought by James Su Hao and Kevin Shi, East Rock Farm Technologies

Sustainability is a massive challenge to dairy farming. Traditionally raising cows will be more and more difficult. Artificial intelligence is bringing revolutions to our life. Dairy, as a traditional industry, will not be an exception either. But how can the technology help in a practical way?

With advanced AI dairy systems in place, how can it help farmers to be more profitable and efficient in China and other parts of the world with smart IoT. Visual recognition technology can help farm managers digitize their barn and animals.

During this sounding board session we discussed for instance the following:

• How do you think AI can help your farm with IoT and VR(visual recognition) technology?
• Which data do you care about most in your daily job?
• Do you think animal group information is sufficient for your decision making? Why?
• Do you have any concerns about sharing the data from your barn after data desensitization?

GDF SOLUTION CENTER | PRECISION FARMING, THE WAY FORWARD WORLDWIDE?

- Farmers Only -

dd. FEBRUARY 4th, 2021

A topic brought by Ad van Velde, dairy farm owner in the Netherlands

Our president Ad van Velde takes part in a project called “National Proeftuin Precisielandbouw” (Precision Agriculture - NPPL). The NPPL project helps farmers and horticulturists to apply ready-to-use precision techniques further. Ad believes that there is a lot to discover in precision farming and to take advantage of for dairy farmers . He wants to acquire as much data from the (expensive) land as possible, which parcels are exceptional and why. What will be the influence on (artificial) manure usage, etc. How does it influence general farm management?

A great discussion among farmers from different parts of the globe on precision farming, soil health and carbon neutrality.

GDF WEBINAR | SELECTIVE DRY COW THERAPY

Presented by Jantijn Swinkels, Global Technical Director Ruminants, MSD Animal Health

DD. January 26th, 2021

- Access for All -

SELECTIVE DRY COW THERAPY

Blanket dry cow treatment has been a cornerstone for mastitis control for many decades, and has contributed to a significant reduction in intramammary infections. This reduction has, over time, resulted in antibiotics at drying off being mainly used in healthy uninfected quarters to prevent new infections, rather than for treating existing infection. Increased public health concern about the prophylactic use of antibiotics, and the introduction of teat sealants as effective alternatives to prevent new infections, paved the way for selection of cows for antibiotic treatment at dry off (selective dry cow treatment). Selective dry cow treatment is well supported in the scientific literature and is therefore increasingly implemented in dairy herds. The presentation discusses the why, who and how to implement this approach on your farm.

Please note that sometimes the sound quality is not at its best.

GDF WEBINAR | MILK: THE CRUDE OIL OF THE FOOD INDUSTRY

dd. DECEMBER 16th, 2020

Watch the recorded webinar below.

Presented by Mels Boer, Global Dairy Analyst, Hoogwegt Group

Mels kicked off our webinar series last May. Not only does he share a lot of information and insights on the dairy market, he is also not afraid to share his opinion and vision with us. An opinion that invites you for good discussions!

This time Mels has a close look at raw milk, a close look from a different angle:

Crude oil is a product that needs to be refined. The demand for e.g. tarmac, gasoline, panty stockings, plastic, jet-fuel, etc is impacting the price of crude oil.
As you all know the world has changed after the outbreak of covid-19. Demand for gasoline and jet fuel has fallen of a cliff, and so did the price of crude oil.

In this GDF Webinar Mels Boer of Hoogwegt (dairy trader) does a similar exercise for milk.

Raw milk is a fantastic product that can be refined. The demand for e.g. piglet milk, ice cream, protein concentrates, fat filled milk powder, leather polish etc. is impacting the price of raw milk
As you all know the world has changed after the outbreak of covid-19. Demand for dairy products has been remarkably good, but can we anticipate what is going to happen next for the dairy demand?

As raw milk is a combination of three valuable components: carbohydrates, protein and fat, we will try to identify how demand will change going forward for these three components.

GDF WEBINAR | EPIGENETICS. FOR THE FUTURE WE NEED NOT TO PREDICT, BUT TO ENABLE IT [video]

Epigenetics. How environmental factors (management) have a long term impact through genetics

dd. SEPTEMBER 16th, 2020

Watch the recorded webinar below.

Presented by Jantijn Swinkels of MSD Animal Health

In order to ensure the future of an animal, it is important to enable its genetic potential for growth and milk production.  But before we get that genetic potential out of an animal, everything has to go right during rearing. An animals genes determine if it has the potential for a high milk production. However, recent science shows that the environment, specifically during rearing, plays just as important a role, or maybe even more important a role in determining if that animal’s genes are fully expressed, which is necessary to reach the animals full potential. The influence of the environment on the animals genes is called epigenetics and starts after conception. The knowledge on epigenetics in cattle is quickly growing and with it the understanding that the environment and management of young animals can directly interact with the genome to influence epigenetic change.

GDF SOLUTION CENTER | MY DEAR FRIEND, WE NEED TO TALK! [ finished ]

dd. JULY 22nd, 2020

"Social distancing VS Future (business) communication"

Co-hosted by Holger Kruse from Holm & Laue

- This event was for our farmers and GDF Partners only -

During this event we looked at 'How can the supplying industry best service us farmers in times of social distancing and less physical moments of contact?' What do I, a dairy farmer, prefer?
Has the manner of communicating changed due to Covid19 or has it merely accelerated the change? How, in what way, do we receive the right amount and the most relevant information to grow our farm and to grow as an entrepreneur? How can the supplying industry provide this? As GDF farmers we like to shape the future, so what do we want?

GDF WEBINAR | INDOOR CONTROLLED FEED PRODUCTION, THE FUTURE FOR SUSTAINABLE DAIRY? [ video

dd. MAY 27th, 2020

Watch the recorded webinar below.

MAIN TOPIC
Providing Dairy Nutrition in a changing world

With current and future water, land, and environmental restrictions, how can we sustainably meet the nutritional needs of our animals while increasing their genetic potential and conserving energy?

The modern dairy producer faces new challenges compared to previous generations of farmers. Environmental regulations that require saving water, decreasing emissions, and increasing sustainability are reshaping dairy management strategies. Consumer demands continue to put pressure on what dairy cattle should be fed and how they are handled. At the same time, genetic selection for higher production has increased nutrition requirements for animals.

How can dairy producers meet the nutrition demands of the cattle and the high standards of the modern consumer, all while staying within the framework of current regulations?

New technology is needed to propel today's dairy into the future.

Join us on a journey of what this might look like and how we can meet these new demands while sustainably growing our operations. We give our vision of what is happening in the world right now. Also what does this mean for dry areas? What does this mean regarding concentrates? (Partial) replacement? We look forward to have you join this webinar and discuss these and many other questions!

GDF WEBINAR | SHORT & MEDIUM TERM DAIRY MARKET OUTLOOK [ video ]

dd. MAY 13th, 2020

Watch the recorded webinar below.

We all want to know what is coming next! What is the impact of COVID-19 on the dairy market in the short and medium term. We do not have a magical Chrystal ball but we do have very good connections with Mels Boer from Hoogwegt. Hoogwegt is ’s worlds biggest privately owned dairy trader, with offices around the globe and sales in 130 different countries. For many years Hoogwegt has been the exclusive buyer of various products / for specific markets for companies like Friesland Campina, Fonterra, Polmlek, Vreugdenhill and many others. Besides these trading activities Hoogwegt also owns and rents dairy factories around the world. Global turnover is > Euro 3 billion / year.

MAIN TOPIC
Short & medium term dairy market outlook by a dairy trader

The outbreak of Covid-19 took the whole world by surprise. Unlike the previous recessions (e.g. Opec Oil Crisis 1973, Dot-com bubble 2001, Global financial crisis 2008) the current crisis is caused by an infectious decease, leading to a severe drop in global DEMAND driven crisis. Last time this happened was in 1918 with the Spanish Flu.

"How is this Covid-19 impacting the dairy markets and what could be the impact in the remainder of the year. "
