GDF Congress | Change of location

After discussion with several business partners and members we decided to change the location of the GDF Congress 2017. Indonesia is of great interest regarding its dairy development and we therefore decided to change the location to this attractive country. The date for the congress will remain the same: May 28th – June 2nd, 2017. Early-bird registration will start November 15th!

Reflections after nearly 50 years of farming

In 1968 I started as a dairy farmer with my father in a 1st generation dairy farm in the Netherlands. Since then I experienced a lot of changes in my life. Food habits changed tremendously. In the sixties main food was bread, potatoes, vegetables and milk. There were no obesity problems for 90% of the consumers, because they needed heaps of energy for doing their daily work. So a lot of physical exercise. Obesity was only known in the upper class of society, because they have little to no physical exercise.

Our farm is very different from the one I joined when I came home to work on the family farm. We ran a typical Cornish (SW England), mixed 120 hectare, family farm milking 60 cows, 100 ewes, a small beef enterprise and arable and vegetables.

Internship in Kuwait

Let us first introduce ourselves. We are Tristan Smits (19 years old) and Joris Simmes (22 years old), two Dutch students who are following a bachelor degree in agricultural entrepreneurship at the CAH Vilentum University of Applied Sciences, Dronten (The Netherlands). We are in Kuwait for our internship that is part of the second year of our study. Both we would like to see a farm where we can learn a lot and asked Bram Prins if he had some suggestions. He told us that he had some contact with a dairy farm in Kuwait and that this farm should be analysed.

Developments in milk prices | May 2016

Unfortunately no good news for dairy farmers concerning the milk prices: the milk prices are still decreasing. For instance the biggest dairy processor in the Netherlands, FrieslandCampina, has lowered the price for May 2016 with nearly 10%: from 27.5 euro/100 kg milk to 25 euro/100 kg milk.

Developments in milk prices

The milk prices for the farmers currently show some decrease, for instance in the USA and the Netherlands. FrieslandCampina, has lowered the price for April 2016 after this also had happened for March 2016. Most of the expected developments that keep pressure on the milk prices, are the same as in the previous months:

Global Dairy Farmers has a restricted group of companies (business partners) which are members of GDF. There is a maximum of 12-14 business partners which do not compete with each other.
